Fixing the Blank Site Editor Issue in WordPress

Encountering a blank screen when trying to access the full site editor in WordPress can be frustrating. The full site editor is a powerful tool that allows you to customize various aspects of your website. However, some users have reported experiencing a blank screen when trying to use it. In this article, we will walk you through two methods to resolve this issue and get your site editor working again.

Method 1: Adjust WordPress URL Settings

If you’re facing a blank screen when accessing the site editor, it’s possible that the issue lies in your WordPress URL settings. Follow these steps to fix the problem:

1. Go to your WordPress dashboard and navigate to Settings > General.
2. Look for the WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) settings.
3. Make sure that the site address matches the WordPress address exactly. If the WordPress address includes a www or non-www URL, ensure that the site address matches accordingly.
4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Save Changes to apply the updated settings.
5. Try accessing the site editor again to see if the blank screen issue is resolved.

Method 2: Enable the REST API

If the site editor is not showing a preview of your website, it’s possible that the REST API has been disabled on your WordPress site. The site editor relies on the REST API to display the preview. Here’s what you can do to enable it:

1. Understand what the REST API is: Introduced in WordPress 4.4, the REST API provides an interface for plugin developers to access WordPress functionality and data.
2. Identify the method you used to disable the REST API. If you followed a guide on disabling the JSON REST API in WordPress, you’ll need to reverse the steps.
3. If you disabled the REST API using a code snippet in WPCode, go to the Code Snippets section in the WordPress admin and toggle off the “Disable WordPress REST API” snippet.
4. If you added code directly to your functions.php file, access the file using FTP or a file manager, remove the custom code, and save the changes.
5. If you disabled the REST API using a plugin, navigate to Plugins > Installed Plugins and locate the relevant plugin. Click on the ‘Deactivate’ link to disable the plugin.
6. Once you’ve completed the steps, try accessing the site editor again. You should now be able to see the preview of your website.

Although the full site editor is a useful tool for designing your website, it does have some limitations. It is only available with block themes, and if you switch themes, you will lose your customizations. If you’re looking for a more versatile solution, consider using WordPress page builders like SeedProd. These page builders provide a drag-and-drop interface that allows you to design individual pages using blocks. They are compatible with any WordPress theme, and you can switch themes without losing your customizations.

With SeedProd, you have the option to choose from pre-built templates or create your own design from scratch. You can even design an entire theme for your website without any coding knowledge. We hope these methods have helped you resolve the blank site editor issue in WordPress.
