Tata Group Sets a Milestone by Becoming the First Indian Company to Produce iPhones

Tata’s Acquisition of Wistron’s Manufacturing Unit

In a remarkable development, Tata Group has successfully acquired Wistron’s manufacturing unit, marking a significant milestone as the first Indian company to manufacture iPhones. This deal, approved by Wistron’s board, firmly establishes Tata Group within the smartphone industry.

As part of the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tata Group aims to begin iPhone production in India within the next two and a half years. These “Made in India” iPhones will be available for purchase both domestically and internationally.

Under the agreement, Wistron’s subsidiaries, SMS InfoComm and Wistron Hong Kong Limited, have been authorized to sign the share purchase agreement with Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL). Once all the necessary agreements are finalized, the deal will proceed to obtain further approvals.

Tata’s Vision for iPhone Manufacturing

Tata has been actively negotiating the acquisition of Wistron’s unit, with an ultimate goal of initiating iPhone assembly in India. The Wistron unit, situated near Bengaluru, already operates an iPhone assembly plant.

As part of their strategic vision, Tata intends to establish 100 exclusive Apple product stores across the country. This move aims to strengthen Apple’s presence in the Indian market while consolidating Tata’s position as a leader in smartphone manufacturing.

Expanding iPhone Production in India

It is worth noting that iPhones are already being assembled in India by two global suppliers, namely Foxconn and Pegatron, with assembly facilities in Tamil Nadu.

This year, India witnessed the launch of the “assembled in India” iPhone 15 models, which became available for purchase on the day of their release.

With Tata’s entry into iPhone manufacturing in India, the country takes a significant step forward in becoming a global hub for high-quality smartphone production. This development not only highlights India’s manufacturing potential but also reinforces its position in the technology market.
